New to Derby? Start Here!
Roller derby is an amazing sport where you can become an adult athlete while making a great group of friends and helping your community. If you're up for a challenge, you'll find Greenville Roller Derby is a competitive league who practices hard and plays even harder. We expect our skaters to not only “give it their all” on the track, but also pursue fitness outside of practice. Skating and exercising outside of practice will be extremely helpful during your training, as you'll be developing muscles not normally used in daily activities.
As a new skater, you’ll complete our 12-week freshmeat program, where you’ll learn how to skate forward and backward, maintain balance, stop, fall correctly, and how to safely hit and take hits in addition to the WDTDA roller derby ruleset. Once you've mastered your freshmeat skills, you'll graduate to our "Tier 2" program for more personalized instruction to further hone your skating and gameplay knowledge before becoming bout-eligible. To reserve your freshmeat program spot, please (1) pay a non-refundable fee of $65 to "@GnvlRollerDerby" on PayPal or "@greenvillerollerderby" on Venmo and (2) complete this form.
Our recruitment events consist of 2 sessions held at Skateland USA on 7514 Whitehorse Road in Greenville. That first day will consist of introductions, discussion of league culture, training and expectations, safety gear and where to purchase it, and a Q&A session. The following session we'll dive deeper into gear, talk about gameplay, then watch veteran skaters scrimmage so you know what to expect. Recruitment is also open to anyone interested in learning how to referee or volunteer!
Our 2025 recruitment dates:
- Monday 1/27 & Wednesday 1/29 @ 6:45PM
- Monday 7/28 & Wednesday 7/30 @ 6:45PM

We're so excited that you're considering joining our team! GRD is always open to transfer skaters; no need to wait for a recruitment event. If you've played in at least one game in an adult league, or at least one season for a juniors team, you'd be considered a transfer skater. Please send your responses to the following questions to [email protected]. Let us know what mad skills you can bring to our league!
- What league are you transferring from? If applicable, what other leagues have you played in?
- How long have you skated?
- When is the last time you skated? When is the last time you played derby?
- What level of gameplay did you participate in with your previous league? (Position, competitiveness level, etc.)
- Do you have WFTDA insurance for this year?
- Have you had any recent injuries or medical concerns we should be aware of?
